Potion Explosion: The Fifth Ingredient- Back to Class

Continuing your education is always a good idea, and with the discovery of a wonderful new potion ingredient, there has never been a better time to return to the Horribilorum Sorcery Academy for Witty Witches and Wizards. The Potion Explosion: The Fifth Ingredient expansion offers everything a young witch or wizard needs to round-out their knowledge base.

Professor Humblescore is back, and he has some new tricks to teach. The Fifth Ingredient adds new Potions, Professor tiles, Reward and Scolding tokens, a Ghastly Cauldron, and a wild new ingredient: Ghost Ectoplasm!

Ghost Ectoplasm is a mysterious substance. Magical scientists are still figuring out all of its properties, but one thing is for sure, it has the ability to mimic other commonly used ingredients. When Ghost Ectoplasm marbles are added to the Ingredient Dispenser they work as a wild ingredient. When they smash into any other ingredient in the Dispenser, it can be treated as if an Explosion has occurred. Likewise, when players have Ghost Ectoplasm in their hand or reserve, they can use it to fill any portion of a Potion’s recipe.

This new flexibility in potion creation can lead to some epic new concoctions in class. The Fifth Ingredient expansion adds four new types of Potions, each with their own special abilities once consumed.  Potions like the Dram of Poltergeist Sweat, the Brew of Feather Touch, or the Chameleonic Varnish will change the way players approach their exams. All of them can be added to a game, or they can be mixed and matched with the standard Potions.

When dealing with a new ingredient and new potion recipes, it makes sense that the Professor is going to incorporate a new piece of equipment. The Ghastly Cauldron can be added to final exams. It begins the game filled with 12 Ghost Ectoplasm marbles. Throughout the course of the exam, certain actions may prompt students to exchange standard ingredients from their hand or reserve with the Ghastly Cauldron, introducing the Fifth Ingredient into their Potions.

Such fantastic new discoveries are bound to attract brilliant minds from around the world. Some visiting professors have come to the Academy, each with their own ideas on how potion creation should be done. The Fifth Ingredient introduces Professor tiles that can be added to the game to tweak the rules and keep the players on their toes. Professor tiles can be selected or added randomly to the game. Depending on which Professor the players end up with they may be able to exchange ingredients with the Ghastly Cauldron, or return ingredients to discard Little Help tokens, or even face a strict time limit for their turn! Each of the different Professors will bring a different feeling and strategy to the game.

With all of these exciting changes to the way classes are run, players are also going to find new ways to earn praise… or reprimands. In their interactions with the Ghastly Cauldron, the new potions, and the Professor tiles, players may earn Reward or Scolding tiles. Each Reward tile is worth an extra point at the end of the game, but each Scolding token will cost players a point. They’ll have to be sure to stay in the Professor’s good graces if they want to graduate with high honors.

Going back to class is always an exciting endeavor. Students can see old friends, catch up on all the gossip, and best of all, enrich their education. Potion Explosion: The Fifth Ingredient adds some challenging elements, twists to the rules, and new ways to play. It’s the perfect addition for any witch or wizard looking to make life feel a little more magical.

Potion Explosion: The Fifth Ingredient will be available in you FLGS on September 29.
